The Spolia Tarot Deck

55.00

The Spolia Tarot, Second Edition, is a creation of writer Jessa Crispin and artist Jen May, with design by Tara Romeo. It contains 94 illustrated cards, with extra cards representing the twelve signs of the zodiac and the four elements of Air, Water, Fire, and Earth. “Spolia” is a term that means using rubble as building material, which the creators felt appropriate for our times “as institutions, gender norms, religions, and ideas about how a society should function are all tumbling down and need to be rebuilt.”

WHAT I LOVE ABOUT THE SPOLIA TAROT: The artwork, for starters. The deck is gorgeous. What’s really great though is how well written the guidebook is that goes with it, lending a lot of wisdom and sharp intelligence to the use of the cards. Together, the Spolia works at a very high standard on multiple levels. Plus, I enjoy the extra cards.

WHAT I’VE LEARNED FROM THIS DECK: This deck holds me to a lot of accountability. You can’t bypass the work you need to do with this deck. It’s akin to having a reading done with another person.

MY FAVORITE CARD: Seven of Swords, because it has offered me potent medicine. The depiction widens the lessons of the card to bring in more of my experiential truth.

GUIDEBOOK: Excellent! It’s succinct and seriously wise.

TAROT EXPERIENCE: While I see this as a deck for those with more background in reading to deepen and widen their relationships to the cards, I also think it would make a beautiful beginner deck for someone wishing to initiate a practice with seriousness and integrity.

In the final two images, the card on the right is from the Spolia. I included these to show how cards of different decks can be drawn together in a single reading to bring forth interesting conversations. The other cards depicted are all available in the shop.
